Comune di Forio
Ischia Travel Guide
I particularly like our next stop on the tour because Forio gets an hour more sunlight than all the other towns in Ischia. In summer, this is particularly good news for us young people, who want to sleep in after staying out late the night before. Forio is also exceptionally stunning because it's remained relatively untouched over the years. And the jet set - from Jacqueline Kennedy to Liz Taylor - has long been lured by its bright sun and soft winds. The sun also makes Forio an ideal places for gardens and grapevines. Indeed, the wine in this community is particularly good and even the vegetables taste better. I think it depends both on the additional sun and the rich soil found in Forio. There are two beaches: One is the quarry of Ischia with all its rocks and is visited mostly by young people because senior citizens don't have the patience for navigating the terrain. The other, Citara, is nearby and is a great spot for families. On this beach, there is another beautiful thermal park, Poseidon, with numerous pools, from which you can take advantage of that additional sunlight. One of the most famous sites in Ischia is the Madonna del Soccorso church, that is surrounded on all sides by the ocean. If you've ever seen the movie Avanti, which took place in Ischia, you might recognize this church. An image of Soccorso lives on an Italian stamp as well. Secret lovers often exchange kisses at the back of the church, and nonne usually sit out front with their handmade goods like straw purses or paintings of island scenes. Pope John Paul II appeared outside this church when he visited Ischia. Another charming stop in Forio is La Mortella, the gardens created by composer Sir William Walton and his wife Lady Susanna. Here, you'll find an olive tree that is 450 years old and numerous varieties of plants including thick bamboo, lotus flowers among lily pads and vibrant orchids. The bird sanctuary is a delight, and if you have time, you should grab an espresso and some delicious lemon caprese cake at the tea house.
