Comune di Lacco Ameno
Ischia Travel Guide
After passing through Casamicciola, I want to bring you to Lacco Ameno, which is - at least for me - a true gift. As soon as you arrive, you will discover in the water a strange rock in the shape of a giant mushroom. There are many stories about this monument formed by the waves of the ocean. You'll just have to ask the locals for the folklore. This town is also rich with archeological finds. I suggest we go to the excavation of Monte Vico, where we'll find the ruins of ancient Pithecusa, which was the name given to this zone when the Greeks discovered it in the 8th century. Thanks to working with metal and the production of terracotta products, the Greeks quickly established the city as an important commercial entity. Numerous finds serve as evidence of Pithecusa's history and you can see all of these objects today in the museums of Santa Restituta and Villa Arbusto. The most famous is "Coppa di Nestore," a cup decorated with the most antique and best maintained inscription in Greek in the Mediterranean. We should also stop by the Basilica of Santa Sul Monte Vico, which was once the most antique settlement on Ischia and one of the oldest Greek colonies of Magna Grecia. Those looking to take it easy on their vacation have to visit Lacco Ameno's Negombo, which is situated in the Bay of San Montano. It is one of the most beautiful and best maintained thermal parks on the island. Not even photos can do it justice. With all these natural and historical wonders, it's no surprise that Lacco Ameno is also the town that throughout history has attracted high society folks and is home to the island's most expensive and ritzy hotel, Regina Isabella. As the tiniest of the comune at 2.7 km and a population of 4,150, Lacco Ameno is proof that good things come in small packages!
