  • The 1994 Italian National Soccer Team

The 15th World Cup tournament was held in the United States in 1994. The finals showcased Brazil and Italy, two powerhouse soccer nations, battling to become the first to win 4 titles. Regulation and extra time was not enough to settle the outcome. The finals came down to penalty kicks and Brazil won 3-2 to claim their 4th title. This became the first final to be decided by penalty kicks. The format for the event was the same as the one used in 1990. You had 24 teams that qualified and they were divided into 6 groups with 4 teams in each group. The top two teams in each group advanced and the four best third place teams from the six groups also moved on to the knockout stage. In the first round Italy was placed in Group E with Mexico, Norway and the Republic of Ireland. All four teams finished 1 - 1 - 1. Tie breakers placed Italy third in Group E. The 6 third place teams were ranked and Italy squeaked into the Round of 16. Once in the knockout stage Italy defeated Nigeria, Spain and Bulgaria by the same score of 2 - 1 setting up the historic final against Brazil. One fact worth noting is that Gianluca Pagliuca became the first goalkeeper to be sent off in a World Cup Tournament match when he handled the ball outside his area. Below is list of the players that participated in the tournament, goals they scored and the results of each match the team played.
