  • Be Cool in 2007
    Our Paesani

    by Francesca Di Meglio

The end of the year is a time for both reflection and predictions. That's why I've decided to put together an Italian-centric list that outlines what was and what will be. If you want to be in with the Italians, then you'll pay close attention to the "in" list for 2007. Consider this your guide to being cool.

IN for 2007 OUT for 2007
Anyone who'll lower - or better yet, ignore - taxes in Italy Romano Prodi - and his crew
Cheering for homegrown World Cup champions like Fabio Cannavaro, who recently won the Balon d'Or, one of soccer's highest honors. Cheering for foreign soccer players like Ronaldhino and Zinedine Zidane.
Any American reality series Italians can find on the many incarnations of Fox that is featured on the Sky system that many of them have in their homes. American shows that never see the light of day in the States find success in Italy. Ballando con Le Stelle. The show took a nosedive this season when the dancing stars got angry with the audience - not to mention their partners.
Eggplant as a color. It's showing up on everything from sweaters to aprons. Every Italian storefront is featuring something in eggplant lately. Shades of pink. It might be the color of femininity, but we knew it was played out when people started walking around with fuchsia telefonini.
Shellfish in everything from soup to pizza. Radicchio - in everything from rice to salad - left a bitter taste in our mouths.
A peaceful pope. An embattled pope.
The Neapolitan soap opera, Un Posto al Sole, has revived itself in its tenth year on the air. Although the characters - who are philandering and committing crimes more than ever - might make your skin crawl, you can't help but stayed glued to your television set every night to see what happens next. While still hilarious, Lo Zio d'America, is just not the same without the beautiful and unforgettable Maria, played by Ornella Muti. Those eyes, those hips, that smile! How could we break up with her?
The Italian national anthem. American rap songs that were popular in the States two years ago.
For the younger crowd, the fairies in the cartoon series Winx have taken the crown as favorite program. The enormous lips - and bigger attitudes - of Bratz are starting to wear on Italian tots.
Hair jewelry - anything that sparkles in a ponytail or bun. Clunky cocktail rings that are bigger than your hand.
