  • Dream Wedding Dresses From Italy -- Almost!
    Our Paesani

    by Francesca Di Meglio

MARCH 13, 2005 - Spring is in the air, which means wedding season is just around the corner. No one does up a wedding - and especially bridal fashion - quite like the Italians. Getting your wedding dress straight from Italy might be a little hard if you're a foreigner - because of the budget-breaking travel costs and the inconvenience of transporting it and finding a tailor back home to make the dream dress hug your body in all the right places. But you can look to the Italians for inspiration, especially those of you who are having your dress made. Bridal shops and seamstresses are willing to work with you to add details or help you find dresses that are similar to your favorites based on images you bring to them. I've done some of the leg work for you. Here are a few great muses for brides to be:

    Cielo Blu Abiti Da Sposa
The modern bride will fall in love with the clean lines and crisp look of the Cielo Blu gowns. A stunning pink gown with a dramatic ruffled halter top and a bright white satin dress with a sheer wrap are simple yet memorable. The site lacks larger photos or the ability to view the dress from more than one angle. But wedding photos from real Italian brides who wore Cielo Blu gowns is a lovely addition - and one that allows visitors the opportunity to see the durability of the dress. The beautiful Italian backdrop makes every bride in the album look that much more like a princess.

    Sartoria Angelina
Brides who want to conform to the Italian Catholic standard of wearing long sleeves in church will find many options at this site. Sartoria Angelina designs might be too flashy for some. It takes a bold bride to show off the ornate details - from elaborate beading to kimono-style lace sleeves. Gathered satin, soft satin roses and long ribbons make an appearance on many of these designs. The most-over-the-top choice is a midriff-baring bridal gown. You've got to have guts (of steel) for that one!

    Antonella Rossi
This high-end collection features dresses for the classic, traditional bride who wants to show off her femininity on the big day. There's a good balance of detail and simplicity. A long-sleeve off-the-shoulder lace top over a simple satin a-line gown to the floor and a simple white halter sheath are typical of Rossi's timeless creations. But you'll feel like a graceful ballerina in the strapless ball gown topped with a pile of tulle. There are no prices mentioned but the Rossi site gives you the same feeling as an expensive boutique. Taking ideas from this site is one way to get the splurge items at a steal. When the link works, there's an English version of the site that will put non-Italian readers at ease.

    Giusy Catapano
Giusy Catapano is the choice for the sexy bride who is hip and trendy. The first clue is the cool video intro to the Web site. Here, you'll find more choices in gold and ivory tones. There also more unique, out-of-the-ordinary designs. An off-center rose on the back of a train or satin that appears folded and sweeps across the bottom of a full ball gown to reveal lace detail is proof of Catapano's fresh outlook on bridal designs.

    Rs Couture
Yes, this site might be a bit intimidating - from having couture in the title to the supermodels showing off the designs. However, the dresses are stunning showstoppers. There's an English version on this one, too. You can see larger photos by clicking on the scrolling collection. When you click, you'll also get a peak at the sketch of the dress. Sweetheart necklines, lots of lace and a boustier top are some of the special details that make these designs pop.
