    COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES
    COMPARATIVI E SUPERLATIVI

(positive degree) (comparative degree) (superlative degree)

    così...come (as...as) più...di (*che) (more...than) il più...di (the most) tanto....quanto " meno...di (*che) (less...than) il meno...di (the least)

    • Examples of positive degree: Mario è così sudioso come suo fratello (Marius is as studious as his brother), Matilde è tanto bella come Giulia (Matilda is as beautiful as Julia), Maria è tanto alta quanto (come) Giulia (Matilda is as tall as Julia)
    • In comparative degree we use di if the second term of comparison is a proper noun, pronoun or quello, questo, ciò (that, this), but we must use *che (that) if it is an adjective, a participle or a common noun; examples: tu sei più intelligente di Giovanni (you are more intelligent than John), Giovanni è meno intelligente di te (John is less intelligent than you), questo è più grande di quello (this one is bigger than that one), tu sei più simpatico (simPAtico) che buono (you are nicer than good), Vincenzo è più rispettato che amato (Vincent is more respected than loved), lei ha più vestiti che scarpe (you have more dresses than shoes).
    • Some adjectives have two forms of comparative and two forms of superlative, as: buono (good), più buono o migliore (better), il più buono o il migliore (best); cattivo (bad), più cattivo o peggiore (worse), il più cattivo o il peggiore (worst); grande (big, large), più grande o maggiore (bigger), il più grande o il maggiore (the biggest); piccolo (PICcolo) (small-little) più piccolo (PICcolo) o minore (less), il più piccolo (PICcolo) o il minore (the least); examples: Teresa è la più buona (o la migliore) della classe (Theresa is the best of the class), Lorenzo è il peggiore (o il più cattivo) dei miei amici (Lawrence is the worst of my friends).
    • Superlative absolute: Italians prefer to add -issimo to the adjective instead of molto (very much), Luisa è bellissima (belLISsima) (Louise is very beautiful), questo caffè è dolcissimo (dolCISsimo) (this coffee is very sweet), gli alunni sono bravissimi (braVISsimi) in matematica (mateMAtica) (students are very good in mathematics), quella ragazza è simpaticissima (simpatiCISsima) (that girl is very nice).
But some adjectives have superlative absolute of latin derivation: buono = ottimo (OTtimo) o eccellente; cattivo = pessimo (PESsimo); grande = massimo (MASsimo): piccolo (PICcolo) = minimo (MInimo). Examples: questo dolce è ottimo (OTtimo) (o eccellente) (this pie is excellent), Caterina è una pessima (PESsima) alunna (Catherine is the worst pupil), questo che ti chiedo è il minimo (MInimo) che tu possa fare per me (this I ask you is the least you can do for me) Dante Alighieri è il massimo (MASsimo) poeta italiano (Dante Alighieri is the greatest Italian poet).
